Satyajit Ray was many things apart from being a movie-maker. He was a musician, graphic designer, magazine editor, calligrapher and most especially a gifted writer. A skilled storyteller, Ray could axtract the many truths of life on paper as easily as he caught them on camera and had over the years amassed many fans of his writing too.
To be fair Ray had both nature and care on his side when it came to writing. The movie-maker’s grandfather Upendrakishore Ray, much like him, was a man of many talents. Apart from being a beloved children’s author he too was an illustrator, philosopher, publisher as well as an amateur astronomer. So, words and stories ran in his DNA. And, his babyhood years provided him with the most special nurturing under the tutelage of India’s most famous poet, Rabindranath Tagore.
