The makers of Chehre decided to opt out of an OTT release and opt for a traditional theatrical release. 

However several movies have proven to underperform at the box office owing to covid-19 restrictions and cinema halls running at 50% occupancy.

Going by the response of the movies that were released thus far it has been reported that producers may not release their movies any time soon not even during Diwali. 

Many are likely to opt for a December release with the hope that things normalise by then.

The hero an ad man is seen driving through thickly Arctic layers of snow as mentioned in the film only over 200 kilometres from Delhi! 

The setting without polar bears is mysteriously described as a place where the weather periodically alternates between icy rains hail storm and scorching sun! 

Which is where the hero car must stop before a tree that fallen.

What follows is a couple of hours of an indoor drama. 

Chiefly starring three old men in a Siberian mansion where Hashmi character spends a night of random interrogation.

A fairly transformed Annu Kapoor, banging it with his Punjabi twang is the former defense counsel.

Is Sameer actually an offender or is he the latest subject of a questionable experiment by a bunch of self righteous possibly deranged men? 

Unlike the source novel which is ambiguous about its themes and characters Chehre is a case of guilty until presumed innocent.

Heavy moralising about Sameer is accompanied by his portrayal as a predator who pays far too much attention to the housemaid Anna. 

Smug and shallow from word go Sameer is further stymied by extenuating circumstances including an affair with his boss’s wife Natasha.

Sameer may or may not be culpable but the 138 minute film is certainly guilty of borrowing from Friedrich Durrenmatt Die Panne. 

The German novel inspired Vijay Tendulkar Marathi stage production Shantata! 

Court Chalu Ahe which was also made into a film in the 1970s. 

Chehre screenplay is by Ranjit Kapoor who had previously written a play based on Die Panne.

Bachchan deeply familiar declamatory manner and measured pauses ensure that the monologue tests patience levels rather than serving as the centrepiece of the film arguments.

The rest of the actors who include Siddhanth Kapoor as a mute character who stands around looking scary are never allowed to steal Bachchan one note thunder. 

Annu Kapoor overly emotive Paramjeet as Sameer mock defence lawyer is actually serving the needs of the prosecution like the rest of the film.

Cornered but defiant  Emraan Hashmi mounts a sparky and memorable defence for himself  and wins.
